How to Do a Low Fade: Step-by-Step Barber Guide
A low fade lives or dies on the guide line. Get that line clean and at the right height, and the rest is just blending. This is the workflow we teach apprentices on the floor — every step, every guard, every lever position.
What you need before you start
- One pro cordless clipper (Wahl Magic Clip, JRL 2020C or BaBylissPRO FX870)
- One zero-gapped fade trimmer (FX787, JRL 2020T or Gamma+ X-Evo)
- Snap-on guards #1.5, #2, #3 and #4
- Optional: foil shaver to finish around the ears and neckline

1. Section the head
Find the parietal ridge and the top of the ear. The low fade guide line should sit roughly one finger-width above the top of the ear and arc gently around the back. Mark it visually before you cut — a low fade that creeps too high stops being a low fade.
2. Drop the guide line
Closed lever, no guard. With a zero-gapped fade trimmer, drop a clean level line all the way around. This is the highest point of skin exposure and the reference for every blend pass that follows.
3. First clipper pass
Cordless clipper with a #1.5 or #2 guard depending on hair density. Work from the guide line up to the parietal ridge, rocking the clipper out to feather the top edge instead of stopping in a hard line.
4. Step up the guards
Move to a #3 above the first pass, then a #4 near the top. Each pass should overlap the previous one by roughly half — that overlap is what gives you a gradient to blend instead of stripes to fight.
5. Blend with the lever
Open lever a quarter at a time and re-cut every guard transition until the steps disappear. This is where a stagger-tooth blade (Magic Clip) or a tool-free fade lever (Gamma+, StyleCraft) earns its keep. Check the blend from both sides at eye level before you commit.
6. Refine with the trimmer
Zero-gapped fade trimmer for the bottom inch above the guide line. This is what gives a low fade the painted edge clients ask for by name. Light touch, slow passes, keep the trimmer flat to the skin.
7. Finish
Foil shaver around the ears and the back for a flush, irritation-free finish. Hot-towel the neckline and apply alcohol-free aftershave to close the pores.

Frequently asked questions
What clipper guard do I start a low fade with?+
Most barbers open with a #1.5 or #2 guard on the first clipper pass directly above the guide line, then step up to a #3 and #4 as you move toward the parietal ridge. Hair density and texture decide whether you start at #1.5 or #2.
How long does a low fade take?+
A clean low fade typically takes 25–40 minutes on the floor, depending on hair density and whether you're refining the line-up and beard in the same session. The blend itself is usually 10–15 minutes once your guide line is set.
Do I need both a clipper and a trimmer?+
Yes. The clipper handles bulk and the blend with guards; the trimmer drops the guide line and refines the bottom inch where the fade meets skin. A foil shaver is optional but recommended to finish around the ears and neckline.
What's the difference between a low fade and a mid fade?+
A low fade keeps the guide line low — roughly one finger-width above the top of the ear — and is more subtle. A mid fade lifts the guide line to the temple height, exposing more skin and creating a stronger contrast with the top.
