How To Cut A Low Fade — The 2026 Pro Guide

A low fade is the most flattering fade across the widest range of clients. The section sits at or just above the ear, and the blend lives in a narrow band that's easier to control than a mid or high. This is how we cut it.

Step 1 — Set the section low

The fade line sits at or just above the top of the ear. Mark it with a guard line first — never freehand.

Step 2 — Bulk above the line

Run a #3 or #2 above the section to clear the bulk. Leave length on top untouched until the fade is done.

Step 3 — Lever-blend the band

Drop a guard, lever-blend in two passes, then drop another guard. The low band gives you less real-estate to work with — work slow.

Step 4 — Trimmer-line the perimeter

A Hi-Viz, FXONE or Rebel trimmer cleans the perimeter without disturbing the fade band.
