How To Zero-Gap A Trimmer — The 2026 Pro Guide
Zero-gapping a trimmer is what turns a line-up tool into a precision instrument. The teeth get aligned almost to the cutter — almost, never past. The wrong adjustment turns a $200 trimmer into a $200 brick that bites.
Step 1 — Strip the blade down
Loosen the two retaining screws. Don't fully remove them — leave half a turn of grip.
Step 2 — Push the cutter forward
Slide the cutter blade forward until the teeth align with the static blade — but stop just before the cutter teeth pass the static teeth.
Step 3 — Leave the safety margin
Pull the cutter back roughly a hair's width. That gap is the safety margin between a clean cut and skin damage.
Step 4 — Tighten and test
Tighten the screws evenly, then test on the side of your finger. If it bites — back the cutter off.
