How To Cut A Taper Fade — The 2026 Pro Guide

A taper is the conservative cousin of the fade. The hair gets shorter as it descends to the perimeter, but never goes to skin. This is the cut that gets requested for weddings, court dates and corporate roles.

Step 1 — Don't oversection

A taper has no hard section line. The blend starts where the natural perimeter ends.

Step 2 — Trimmer-define the perimeter

Define the perimeter with a trimmer first — sideburns, ear arch, nape.

Step 3 — Blend down to the perimeter

Lever-blend a #2 to the perimeter, then a #1 just below. Don't go to zero.

Step 4 — Soften the perimeter

Most tapers benefit from a soft natural perimeter rather than a hard line — softer = more timeless.
